Wk 2 & 3 - Blog reflections

Today in class, Mdm Faridah went through with us the different purposes of websites that are existing online. They are mainly classified as Business/marketing, Informative, Advocacy, News, Personal and Entertaining categories.

I feel that it is important for us to know a website's purpose as we would know what we are researching for. It enables us to better identify if we are on the correct internet resource or not. For example, the research topic given to me is 'Trends and developments in the US animation industry", I would not be able to find information on a website that might be advertising for softwares/equipments that they are selling. Although they are related to each other, the latter would be considered as a 'Business/Marketing' website. Only 'Informative' websites can provide me the answers for my research question. Thus, having some knowledge about the various website categories are useful and help in our research in future.

Save Our Environment - www.saveourenvironment.org/ is an advocacy website as it is created to influence the public to learn how to conserve resources in the place where they live. It also has campaigns and donation options that would want to garner the public's support for their cause. In comparison, Amazon - www.amazon.com, the website I used for my E-shopping activity, provides a platform for people to promote products they offer to sell. Money transactions are made in this website from one person to another to purchase a certain product involving no cause.
These two websites obviously serve different purposes altogether and should not be mixed up at all.

The most meaningful lesson I've learn in this week's lesson would be the correct categorizations of the different websites and their purposes. I only new a few categories such as websites that provide me with current news knowledge, websites that sell things, websites with information that act as resources for my research work. However, after attending this week's lesson, I am able to identify the website with its purpose and this would definitely help me in my research work next time!

Wk 3 - Shopping with my "Second Life"!

I've only heard about this virtual avatar world called 'Second Life'.
However, after today's EIR lesson, I was required to create a Second Life account and would be able to experience it for myself!

I downloaded the file, logged in, and i was transported to this place called the 'Welcome Island'.

There were many signboards around greeting me as it was my first visit. There were many other avatars around too, however, no one responded though I tried to talk to them...

I could even fly up into the sky by pressing the 'page up' key on the keyboard!

I thought that I would be able to find the shopping mall/market place here, however, I couldn't. I found out that the marketplace is available on the Second Life website. So, I logged out of the system and went to check out the marketplace website!

**********

Online shopping at SecondLife Marketplace

I would want my avatar to look pretty and look good.
So I clicked on 'apparel' from the long list of things they offer. (There are all sorts of things from a variety of different categories! E.g. Animals, Gadgets and even Vehicles.)

The home page for the 'apparels' section provides a wide range of clothing choices!
I had to take quite awhile to actually choose something I want!

In Second Life, they use a currency called the Linen Dollars, which I am not very sure on how to earn them. Perhaps I'll find out more as I explore this more.
I browsed through a few things and I am guessing that these items for sale in the marketplace are actually designed and created by some creative and IT savvy Second Life users themselves! I am just inferring from what I read in the descriptions of the items.

These are the things I would put in my shopping cart after browsing or 'window shopping' in the marketplace for quite awhile...

1. !!KKBB!! Tifani Dress - Black, L$5.
Such an elegant looking dress for a price so low.
I want my avatar to be in this dress. Oh my!

2. Grey high heel stilettos L$1.. ONLY!
Where can you find nice shoes this cheap in real life?

3. Grand Piano with 15 music pieces L$280
I have a strong interest in playing a piano, but I only have a small keyboard at home. It'll will be awesome to be able to purchase a grand piano like this! At L$280, it's counted as very affordable compared to real life.

That concludes my "Shopping Trip" in Second Life.
It was fun trying to choose and decide on what things to buy, because there's just too many!
I am surprised about the variety of items that the website offer.

If only shopping in real life can be as convenient (the things purchased would be TELEPORTED to your avatar immediately wow!) and as affordable.
But I guess this can only happen in the virtual world...

Wk 2 - E-shopping Spree!

Wow, I am suddenly given $500 from EIR to go online shopping on the internet!!!
(How I wish the money is real)

I chose to browse at the website www.amazon.com as it provides a wide range of items!
These are the things I would want to buy:
Canon PowerShot SX210IS
Canon PowerShot SX210IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 14x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Purple) --- $249.00

My number must-buy item would be a digital camera as I enjoy taking photos but do not own one! With this camera, I would be able to capture and share the memories of my family and friends on Facebook
I want to get this particular canon digital camera as it is compact, small, but has many useful functions! I would use this camera instead of my integrated handphone camera as it would take photos of a higher quality. Finally, it's the camera's high zoom function that entices me to buy it. It can zoom up to as far as 14x and I would be able to take photos of things/scenery etc that are quite far away from me.

i-need Neck & Shoulder Massager
Ineed Neck and Shoulder Massager --- $59.99.

I would also buy this neck and shoulder massager for my Mum!
I believe my Mum would need this as she have to do many household chores everyday.
So, owning a massager would relieve aching in the neck and shoulder area in a convenient way.

2008 Ben 10 Ten Alien Force Omnitrix Illuminator 30 Images Black & Green Face

Ben 10 Ten Alien Force Omnitrix Illuminator 30 Images Black & Green Face --- $15.00

I would buy this Ben 10 toy for my 8 year old nephew cos Ben 10 is his favourite cartoon!
He would always pretend to 'morph' into the superhero aliens as Ben 10 did, so I thought it would be better if he has this watch toy to get the sound effects and etc.

Then, I went on to www.Topshop.com to browse for apparel/shoes and accessories.
My final choice is...
ACTIVE Silver Brothel Creepers

Topshop ACTIVE Silver Brothel Creepers --- £60.00
After converting the amount into Singapore dollars, this pair of boots would cost about $122.00!
I am a big fan of boots!
However, I only own a pair of basic black ankle boots because they usually cost a bomb.
That is why if I am given the $500, I would buy this pair of silver boots right away.

**********

After adding all the money I would spend on this online shopping spree, I would spend a total of $445.99!

I enjoyed doing this blogpost because one of my favourite past-time activities would be online shopping.
I usually shop at websites known as 'Blog shops' as the apparels they offer might be cheaper than when you buy it at a shopping mall.
However, since I am given 'virtual credits', I would just go ahead and shop at more established websites such as Topshop.

I still am rather surprised about the number of things $500 can buy me.
One tip from me: It is important to compare and choose the better and more affordable product to maximise your spendings. This is to ensure that you can get what you want and help you to save money at the same time!

So, the good thing is that I still have around $50 left after buying so many items!
I can save this amount of money in my bank then. :)

Wk 1 - About me!

Hello!

My name is Adeline but some people call me Adee for short. (pronounced as 'addy')
I'm in my final year in the Diploma of Consumer Science & Technology in the Applied Science School. Many people say I don't look my age haha!

I enjoy going to the Karaoke/K-box to sing, watching movies, and trying out new food with my friends. When I'm alone at home, I would usually spend my time online using facebook or watching videos on youtube. I would (TRY) to read books too.

I'm very into the latest music trend in Singapore --- KPOP, Korean-pop music.
It is so hard to choose but my favourite group would be SHINee!

Though they are young, they are hardworking and don't gain popularity with just their pretty faces. They can really dance and sing quite well. That's why I admire their talent!
Another thing, Kpop songs are real catchy, it gets you hooked. ^^

My favourite TV programme for now would be the latest "Master Chef - America" that started showing on Ch.5 recently. It's interesting to see what mind-boggling cooking challenges the show can come up with for the contestants. The climax of this show would be the dishes the contestants produce and the elimination round!

My favourite internet sites are obviously the social media facebook, twitter and YOUTUBE.
I can say "Youtube is my best friend" because being at home would be sooo boring without it. I can watch dramas, listen to music, learn many things in this one website!
Most awesome website on the net, in my opinion.

In my course, I am exposed to cooking as we have cooking practicals in school. So, a hobby that I am passionate about would obviously be cooking, more specifically, Baking!
If you want to bake, I suggest that you should find a good and recognized recipe book from the library. The recipes in there are usually tried and tested, so you will most probably succeed if you follow the instructions closely.

There are a variety of websites that has great recipes too. However, I find that www.foodnetwork.com has some of the easiest and tastiest recipes!
You can try Youtube cooking demo videos too!

Fret not if you are too lazy to bake, try this super easy no-bake cheesecake!
I myself have tried this and it tasted great, a must try if you're a cheeselover!

Oops, I think I really typed ALOT. :x
Thanks for reading yea!
